Check the HKSAR table

The Immigration Department’s table states whether a travel document receives visa-free entry and gives the relevant period. The version reviewed was updated in August 2026 and revised on 22 September 2026 1.

Some nationalities require a Hong Kong visa even for airside transit. Indian nationals eligible for visa-free visits must complete the official pre-arrival registration before travel 1.

When a visa or permit is needed

A traveller who is not covered by the visa waiver, or who intends to stay longer than the visa-free period, must obtain a visit visa or entry permit before arrival 2.

Applicants must show a genuine visit, adequate funds and, for transit, an onward ticket except where the destination is mainland China or Macao. Each application is decided on its own merits 2.

Documents and border decision

The traveller should hold a valid travel document with adequate returnability and meet normal immigration requirements. A visa or waiver does not guarantee permission to land 1,2.

A visit permission does not authorise work, study, establishing a business or residence. Those purposes require the relevant visa or entry permit 1.

Separate from mainland China

A mainland China visa, unilateral waiver or 240-hour transit permission does not set the Hong Kong rule. Check each border crossing as a separate immigration event 1,3.
