Temporary Stay

Chile grants Temporary Stay to foreign visitors entering for tourism, business or another short purpose without intending to settle. It authorises up to 90 days, never beyond the validity of the passport or travel document 1.

The entry permission is recorded in the Tarjeta Única Migratoria issued by the Investigations Police at admission. Keep that record and check its expiry date 1.

Who needs a prior visa

Temporary Stay normally does not require advance permission. Nationals of countries selected for national-interest or reciprocity reasons must first obtain a consular visa. The Foreign Ministry provides a live nationality selector with the requirement, fee and maximum stay 2.

Extension and work

A visitor can request one extension for up to 90 days before the original stay expires. The stated fee is US$100 equivalent in Chilean currency, and children are exempt from that extension charge 1.

Temporary Stay does not authorise paid work as its standard rule. A narrow group carrying out specific and occasional activities may apply for separate work authorisation 1,2.

Before travel

  • Use the Foreign Ministry selector for the passport nationality 2.
  • If a visa is required, apply through Chile’s official consular system before travel 2.
  • Carry a valid passport and evidence of lawful means for the visit 1,2.
  • Check the Tarjeta Única Migratoria immediately after admission 1.
