Who needs a visa

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry publishes a country table showing whether an ordinary passport holder needs a Visit Visa, known as VIVIS. Exemptions and permitted periods vary by nationality, making that table the official starting point 1.

Australian, Canadian and United States passport holders became subject to the visitor visa rule again on 10 April 2025. For tourism and business stays of up to 90 days, the official route is the eVisa 2.

What a visitor stay covers

A VIVIS covers a stay of up to 90 days without immigration intent or paid employment. Permitted purposes can include tourism, business, transit, short study, conferences and unpaid artistic or sporting activity 3.

An extension may be possible for some nationalities, but treaty rules can make a 90-day stay non-extendable. Travellers should use the nationality table and the entry record rather than assuming a further 90 days 1,4.

Documents and border decision

A visa exemption or issued visa does not itself guarantee admission. The Federal Police makes the admission decision at the border 4. Carry the passport used for the visa check, evidence of the visit purpose and onward travel where requested.

Before travel

  • Find your nationality in the Foreign Ministry’s current visa table 1.
  • If using an Australian, Canadian or US passport, obtain the eVisa before travel 2.
  • Check whether your nationality’s permitted stay is extendable 1,4.
  • Do not use visitor status for paid employment in Brazil 3.
