Who needs which visa
Visa-exempt nationalities do not need a visitor visa. Other tourists normally use the ordinary single-entry visa. Tanzania Immigration publishes separate visa-free and referral lists 1,4.
US passport holders cannot use the ordinary tourist visa. They must apply for the multiple-entry category at US$100, even for a single tourist visit 1.
Fee and stay
The ordinary visa costs US$50 and can be valid for up to 90 days. It covers tourism, family or friend visits, meetings, workshops and exhibitions, but does not permit work or business activity 1.
The US tourist multiple-entry visa costs US$100 and can be valid for up to 12 months. Each stay is limited to a maximum of 90 consecutive days 1.
Documents and timing
How to apply
Use visa.immigration.go.tz, complete the form, upload the documents and pay by the methods on the government portal. Approval or refusal is sent by email and can be tracked online 1,3.
The portal covers both the mainland and Zanzibar. Select the first destination on the form. One valid visa permits travel between the two parts of Tanzania 1,3.
Approval is not admission
The visa grant notice lets you travel for entry clearance. Tanzania Immigration states that the officer at the entry point makes the final admission decision 2.
